Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ: FAQ

What happens during the sessions?

My way of working is client centred, which means that I will listen to and work with whatever you choose to bring to each session. I aim to support you by helping you reflect and by asking open questions designed to encourage you to explore your difficulties and strengths more fully. I enjoy working creatively, so, if this is appealing to you, a session could include drawing or using objects to consider your situation. Many clients also benefit from being taught Mindfulness techniques to help with anxiety and sleep issues.

What should I expect after I contact you?

I offer a free 20 minute telephone consultation to discuss your situation and ask any questions you might have. This allows us both to see if we would be a good fit. Should you decide to proceed, we would then arrange a day and time for your session, which would not ordinarily change. I would then ask you to read through and sign a therapy agreement and to provide personal details.

If you are contacting me for counselling for a young person under 16 years, I invite them to attend a free 20 minute online or telephone session with me so that they can have a chance to meet with me and ask any questions.

I aim to answer all queries within 24 hours.

How many sessions will I need?

Until you begin, it is often difficult to know how many sessions you are likely to need. I prefer to work in an open ended way, meaning you are able to decide when you feel an ending is right. Some clients choose to work to a fixed number of sessions because of financial or time considerations and I am happy to accommodate this too. When you decide to stop the counselling, I would usually recommend you have a final ending session to reflect on the process.
